Australian GM David Smerdon has written a book that will, I think, have an impact on amateur play around the world. I bet that hundreds, maybe thousands of of club players will, after browsing through this book, take up the Scandinavian as one of their main opening weapons and become a gambiteer.
The repertoire against 1.e4 that Smerdon has developed is a club players dream: offbeat, forcing, sharp, adventurous and fun. And it provides many opportunities to catch out your opponents. In almost 70 classical games and more than 300 blitz games Smerdon himself has scored over 70% with it.
The Portugese and Icelandic Gambits are the core of the system. “In exchange for one lousy foot soldier”, Smerdon writes, “Black gains a lead in development, fantastic piece activity and immediate dangerous attacking chance against the White king”. Now, there you have it!
The book itself is, just like the lines it proposes, great fun. Smerdon is real writer! That there are loads of new ideas and novelties will come as no surprise with a repertoire like this.
This is a sparkling book and a club players heaven
